Jan 5 survey project went really good,
Despite the fact we had 2 days of heavy snow in Mountain and weak but
continuous rain on flatlands Thursday and Friday.
In fact it was half a meter in my house before I could dig the car out to drive to
cave country Friday morning.
Actually we were expecting doubtful weather and were apprehensive about
the water flow build up as were getting the gear ready (most of the day Friday)
None less Saturday morning menu had pasta with rain no stop all day,
Once at Oliero the mountains and the valley walls where all white, the river
and cave flow was minimal and water was very clear.
So we decide to go dive but shorten the dive bottom time to 60-90minutes
from the 36mt bottle drop. Basically survey only.
The cave conditions were the best I personally seen so far, water was
completely clear and flow was minimum, however there was always the flood
warning in the back of our minds.
The team was able to place and survey 400mt more of main tunnel, including
a portion of the promising "ramo attivo" at the second fork of main tunnel, the
flow was more perceptible here and also water was clear as crystal, we went
for a while with no lines on site however we found a portion of broken line
from earlier explorations attempts, just as it was time to turn the dive.
Cause of the incredible conditions we agree and end up extending the dive,
so it was 130 minutes before the support divers finds us, 3 check dives after
schedule, oops !
Besides the rb's, zeuxos, my new NIKKAA electric heating, it was great to
have the team assisting in the 140minute deco, for a total of about 260
minutes at 8°C water and 5-6° C outside.
With excellent control by Surface manager Luca Bizzotto.
No casualties or accidents.
Next morning drizzle and fog, but conditions were the same at the cave.
In fact Tony and Mirko show up dive to recover the last bottle.
Maybe we could of do more time but also we could have been flush out, so it
was on the limit but a safe plan.
It seems caves are not draining water, maybe as is frozen or pack on snow on
top despite the bottom rain. For sure we all keep learning more about the
cave.
However temperature is cold until next weekend. As a matter of fact snow is
forecast for next weekend too, it seems could be the best day yet ?
Thanks to surface manager Luca B.
Luca M, Marco and Giovanni on safety diver duties.
Mirko and Simone with over 4 support setup and clean up dives!
Fenu making all this as easy as it gets, always willing to contribute beyond
commitment.
Not bad to start 2008
